Reading Reflection: Neoliberalism – the ideology at the root of all our problems by George Monbiot

Alright, here we go. Round 2 of how much I hate rich people with every fiber of my being. This is another familiar article I read in the past for school, but I cannot say that I truly mind too much, especially since it includes Naomi Klein, whose work I find fascinating. I’m currently reading her book Doppleganger, which is a wild social commentary of online radicalism, and her being mistaken for fellow author (turned conspiracy theorist), Naomi Wolf. I have not, however, read The Shock Doctrine yet, but I think I may in the future.

Continuing, Neoliberalism really hoodwinked the general public, thinking capitalism was the root of all our problems, when, in fact, it was its antichrist spawn all along. I feel as if the concept of Neoliberalism shouldn’t even be real because of how on the nose it is; a little too comically evil, even. I’m almost positive that Von Mises and Hayek must have looked like the villain from Rocky and Bullwinkle, Snidely Whiplash…but duplicated (or maybe one of them could have been Muttley), just snickering and twirling their moustaches as they came up with a scheme to pay no taxes and horde all the wealth in society, and in the process ruining that society for everyone but themselves.

I do have to give credit where it’s due, Monbiot really wrote not only an in-depth summary of the origins and history of neoliberalism, but he also delightfully veered sharply south into the modern rise of fascism…because of course it would. Murphy’s Law or something like that, whatever can go wrong, will go wrong. Although, it’s easy to see anyhow, democratically elected governments subjected to the whims of lobbyists, the cutting of social supports and blaming the economy, the unstoppable inflation and rent, and the steady descent into privatization for healthcare, education, and… literally everything else.

The future is bleak. Bring back the guillotine.
